Last Friday Tortured Souls – Broken Souls Book 2 officially launched on Amazon for the Kindle. There’s also a print version for those that desperately need a physical copy to collect dust on a bookshelf. I also made Tattered Souls – Broken Souls Book 1 permanently free and kicked it across to multiple vendors.
The night I launched Tortured Souls it snowed. Is that a coincidence? Almost certainly. It still leaves me suspect, however. It’s the first time it’s snowed here in early November for quite a long time. Some of you may like snow. I’m not a fan, so I consider this an ominous sign.
Of what, I have no idea. Just… ominous.
Rather than risk venturing out into the one inch of snow and find myself re-enacting the worst parts of The Donner Party, I bundled up and spent the weekend writing. It turns out it’s NaNoWriMo! I mean, I should be writing anyway, but now I have an additional level of pressure being applied to make sure I’m productive. Earlier in the year I set myself a 2000 Word per Day minimum. I’ve been shaky adhering to it, but with NaNo in full swing I’m rekindling that fire. NaNo requires 1666.66 repeating words per day to complete the 50k word challenge; I “won” a few years back and haven’t really bothered since, but I’m giving it another go. Currently I’m a little behind, but with 2000 words a day I’m catching up.
With the launch of another Urban Fantasy novel, I’ve decided to switch gears so I don’t burn out on Samuel Walker and Friends. I’ve started work on an Epic Fantasy that I like to call a Throwback Fantasy piece – it’s a coming of age novel and reminds me of the fantasy novels I grew up reading. I don’t want to call it “simpler”, but not everything needs to be dark and brooding. I’ve been writing enough of that with Broken Souls. This is just a throwback to a time when Fantasy was a lot more Campbellian in a Hero’s Journey sense. As of the writing of this post I’m 12 chapters in (out of a projected 28) with 33k words. I even list most of those words, even in the order they’ve been written! I’m expecting it to top out around 90k, and I’ve already had my writing group give the first 25k a look over.
In reading news I’m waiting eagerly for Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson, due out shortly. I did just polish off What The Hell Did I Just Read by David Wong last week, which I enjoyed better than the second book in the John Dies at the End series. I’ve been in a bit of a reading lull of late, something I intend to rectify as the cold weather means that I get to sit indoors and do nothing on my time off. Like most readers I have an enormous backlog of novels waiting for me to get through and I might as well get started on my bucket list item “read everything, ever”.
I picked up a new GoPro the other week, and I’m tinkering with the idea of some sort of video blog. The only things holding me back are fear and a lack of content, so once I figure those out, I’ll let you all know. I’m trying to resurrect my social media presence as well, and am pondering seeing what something like a Patreon account might do for me. So, stay tuned!
